PERMISSIONS

4th Wall: Honestly, whatever floats your boat, John will react accordingly.
Threadjacking: I'd prefer if you asked oocly first, but I imagine that in most cases it will be fine.
Mind-reading etc.: Probably fine, but I would prefer if you'd let me know before you bust out the Jedi mind tricks.
Fighting: John is a former soldier, and as such, he's a good shot and is fairly skilled in unarmed combat. It's not impossible to catch him off-guard, though, and he's usually not the one to start a fight, but if someone throws a punch at him, he'll be likely to give them one better.
Hugging/Kissing: He will dodge hugs or kisses, or any such intimate gestures, if at all possible, unless they are from very specific people (namely Mary and Sherlock). Hugs will probably be grudgingly accepted from most people if he must, but he'd really rather not. Kisses are far less acceptable, but feel free to try, anyway!
Sexual relations/Relationships: In most cases, I default to playing John somewhere at/near the end of season 3, and as such, he's married and not normally going to admit to being interested romantically or sexually in anyone but Mary. In anything earlier, he's single and probably in between one brief, doomed relationship or another. In general though I am open to most shipping/au options.
Physical contact: Casual physical touch will generally be tolerated, he's fine with a handshake or a pat on the shoulder. Anything past that will make him visibly uncomfortable unless it's someone he's very familiar with. That said, feel free to do whatever you like to him (short of actually killing him), he just won't be too happy about it.
